Breastfeeding Support Center

How many times have you heard the debate about whether to breastfeed or use formula? There is nothing more natural than a mother nursing her baby, and while the debate rages on, BWHC enthusiastically encourages breastfeeding. It is the perfect food to nourish your newborn. Breastfeeding has been linked to several lifelong health advantages for both mothers and babies. Even mothers who give birth by cesarean can initiate, establish, and continue breastfeeding-particularly if they are encouraged, educated, and supported by breastfeeding specialists. It is a special bonding time between mother and baby and BWHC has an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) on staff to provide education and information, facilitate the weekly support group, and meet with mothers who desire private consultation.

"Breastfeeding Works" is the title of our breastfeeding class. Expectant parents are encouraged to attend the class together during the second trimester of pregnancy. This class is full of practical tips: how to know your baby is getting enough, how to tell if the baby is latched on well, and how to learn positive breastfeeding habits. It includes discussion on balancing work and breastfeeding, picking a pump, and accessing community resources and support. Dads and other support people are always welcome! Learning about breastfeeding before your baby is born gives you the opportunity to make the most of this time as you plan for the changes a new baby will bring to your family.

Returning to work or school? More and more mothers are returning to work while continuing their breastfeeding. A little advance planning and learning about what resources are available opens up a world of possibilities. Cost for the three-hour class is only $10.00, and is held the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 AM until noon. All class materials are provided and you can register for the class at the front desk.

"Nursing Mothers Group" is fun-and free! This is a weekly opportunity for anyone wanting to learn more about breastfeeding. Moms bring their babies (and maybe siblings) and spend two hours visiting with one another discussing tips and sharing stories. The company of other moms can be just what is needed to make a healthy and joyful adjustment to breastfeeding. This group is held every Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until noon at the Breastfeeding Support Center (located in the Ultrasound Building).

Private consultations are also available for those times when breastfeeding presents a particular challenge and you desire personal attention and assistance. During the consultation, the lactation consultant will take your breastfeeding history, observe a complete feeding, assess your situation, and answer any questions you may have. She will discuss recommendations to help you meet your breastfeeding goals and develop a care plan that is tailor-made for you and your baby. To reach our lactation consultant directly, please call Sharon at 602.348.2483.
