Winter 2001 Herbs in Pregnancy By: Marianne Romans, CNM It is estimated that 47% of the U.S. population have taken or currently use herbal or natural supplements. Western medicine even with all of its advances has not been successful in treating some of the very common chronic conditions that people live with. Health care today is integrating herbal and complementary medicine into mainstream medical practice. At Bethany Women's Healthcare we address the whole patient believing body and mind are interconnected. Diet, lifestyle, attitude and preventive measures all play an important role in your health. Vitamins, minerals, and natural supplements can add to your well being. There is a wide range of dosage and safety in herbal use. At one end of the spectrum are nourishing herbs such as nettle or raspberry and gently safe herbs such as mint and chamomile. At the other end of the spectrum are drug like plants with a high potential for toxicity. In our newsletter, we would like to provide some information that may be useful to you. Herbs that should be avoided or used with caution during pregnancy include: goldenseal, ginko, Asian Ginsing, Ma huang, feverfew, licorice, and the stimulant laxative herbs: cascara sagrada, senna, buckthorn, and aloe. Avoid using herbs during the first trimester. Look for more information on herbs and their use in further newsletters.

My Experience at Bethany Women's Healthcare By Lori Gonzales I feel so blessed and fortunate to have given birth to both of my children at Bethany Birth Center. I am continually made aware of how special and unique the Center is when I listen to the experiences of other women and relate my own labor and delivery stories to them. I get a lot of raised eyebrows when I tell people how wonderful my drug-free births were? Giving birth is not easy, but when I look back on the births of my son and my daughter, I have nothing but positive thoughts and feelings. I was taught to trust my body and to believe in my ability to give birth. I was given the time, guidance, and freedom to determine the course of my labor. I knew that my comfort and the health of my child were the primary elements of my care. Women seem to love to share their "war stories" of childbirth. I am happy to say I have none. I am grateful to Bethany Women's Healthcare for allowing my to experience childbirth as natural, sacred, and within my power.
BWHC Family Picnic Review By Kelly Chrisbacher The 7th Annual Bethany Birth Center Family Picnic was held on October 21st, at the Saguaro Ranch Park in Glendale. Mother Nature's gift of rain did not prevent picnic goers from enjoying the food and friendly conversation. A piñata was an especially big hit with the children and adults. Birth Center staff was thrilled to see all the familiar faces and marveled at how fast all the babies are growing. Door prizes awarded this year included a camera, a long distance phone card, a blood pressure kit, a first aid kit, and gift certificate to Target.
The winners were: The Bethany staff looks forward to seeing everyone again at next year's picnic, or sooner.
