What Are My Birth Control Options?

If you’re not sure which birth control method is right for you, take a pause and read this blog. We break down all your options — from pills and IUDs to implants, patches, and barrier methods. Discover what best suits your lifestyle and health needs.

You might be wondering how to choose the proper birth control when there are so many options. Our team, led by Giuseppe F. Ramunno, MD, at Bethany Women’s Healthcare, understands that choosing the right birth control involves several factors, such as your lifestyle, health preferences, and personal likes.

Fortunately, you get to pick. Each option has its own benefits, effectiveness, and potential side effects. Understanding your choices can help you make an informed decision that fits your needs.

Hormonal birth control methods

Hormonal methods use synthetic hormones to prevent pregnancy, and they’re among the most commonly used options. Birth control pills, also known as oral contraceptives, contain either a combination of estrogen and progestin or progestin alone. They’re highly effective when taken consistently at the same time each day.

Other hormonal options include the contraceptive patch, which you apply to your skin weekly, and the vaginal ring, which you insert monthly. These methods work by preventing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus to block sperm from entering the uterus.

Injectable birth control, such as the Depo-Provera® shot, is another hormonal option. We administer it every three months, and it’s ideal if you prefer not to take daily pills.

Hormonal implants, like the Nexplanon® implant, are small rods placed under the skin of the upper arm that release progestin over several years, offering long-term protection.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs)

IUDs are small, T-shaped devices that we insert into your uterus. They’re highly effective and can last anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type. There are hormonal IUDs, which release progestin, and nonhormonal copper IUDs, which prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg.

IUDs are low-maintenance and reversible, making them a popular choice for long-term contraception.

Barrier methods

Barrier methods physically block sperm from reaching an egg. Condoms are the most well-known barrier method and are also the only form of birth control that helps protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Other options include diaphragms, cervical caps, and contraceptive sponges. While these methods are less effective than hormonal or long-acting options, they can be used in combination with other techniques for extra protection.

Permanent and other methods

If you’re an individual or a couple seeking a permanent solution, sterilization procedures are available. Tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men are highly effective, long-term options.

Choosing the right option

Selecting the best birth control method depends on your health, convenience, and comfort level. Factors such as menstrual symptoms, future pregnancy plans, lifestyle, and risk of STIs play a role.
